Our headquarters is in San Francisco with offices in Anchorage, Bozeman, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, Juneau, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Tallahassee, and Washington, D.C.The Research Analyst works within the Prospect Development team within the Development Operations, Research & Evaluation team under the supervision of the Manager of Prospect Research. The Prospect Development Team is part of Earthjustice's Development, Operations, Research, and Evaluation Team and manages two branches of work - Prospect Research and Prospect Management. The Prospect Research Team's primary role is to provide accurate and timely research to gift officers and senior leadership to optimize fundraising efforts. The Prospect Research Team is seeking a Development Research Analyst to join its four-person team. The analyst supports Principal Gifts, Major Gifts, Foundations, Planned Giving, Intermediate Giving, Public Support, Donor Relations, and Executive efforts. The Analyst partners with gift officers and other staff to identify, cultivate, and track appropriate prospects and donors.This is a full-time role with an anticipated start date in January. The successful candidate will work a hybrid schedule from our San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, or Washington, D.C. Offices or work fully remote from the United States.Responsibilities -Fundraising Support (60%)

  • Provide timely prospect identification and detailed research and analysis of prospects specific to fundraising objectives (strategy meetings, donor visits, events, solicitations, etc.).
  • Provide clear and professionally written materials on donors and prospects for the organization.
  • Review and analyze large volumes of information from news resources; financial and philanthropic reports; reference materials (both printed and electronic); external screening services; and organization files.
  • Research and synthesize biographic and financial information on individuals and foundations to create event biographies and research profiles that pertain to the organization's fundraising objectives.
  • Work on internal and external routine and special proactive prospecting projects that identify foundations and individuals with capacity, interest and inclination to make major gifts to the organization.
  • Participate in development strategy meetings with gift officers and Prospect Management, providing prospect information and insights on strategy from the prospect development perspective.
  • Collaborate with development staff to provide information important to the development of qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of managed donors.
  • Serve as a resource on donor and prospect research, as well as research tools and methods for entire development department and executive staff.
  • Provide accurate, timely and professionally written materials that incorporate feedback on prospects to help teams meet fundraising objectives, including for donor visits, events, etc. -
  • Respond to ad-hoc research requests from colleagues and department management.
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with prospect development, such as entering research requests, monitoring deadlines, communicating with development teams, scheduling and meeting preparation, including sharing agendas and documents, taking notes, and tracking next steps.Database and Research Tools (35%)
    • Perform complex analyses and organize information to identify philanthropic patterns, affinity, and relationships among individuals and foundations.
    • Develop proactive prospecting methodologies to support organizational goals, including data mining and sophisticated constituent database queries.
    • Collaborate with the Manager of Prospect Research to continually revise research products for internal clients and recording methods for tracking this research.
    • Collaborate with Prospect Management team to maintain individual and foundation prospecting and prospect management tools.
    • Review the accuracy of electronic records and other organization information on prospects and donors and facilitate changes and additions as needed.
    • Stay aware of fundraising trends and issues, maintaining knowledge of available training and educational opportunities to develop necessary skills.
    • Identify and evaluate new paid and free research resources and make recommendations as to their usefulness to the organization's development research needs.
    • Maintain research records in online files and database.
    • Perform data hygiene and record keeping tasks within databases in accordance with team standards, such as contact report data entry and auditing relationship management software.
    • Collaborate on donor screenings and predictive modeling projects and develop strategic direction on the use of analytic data in the identification of prospective donors and assist gift officers and Prospect Management in the utilization of this research.
    • Perform other duties and miscellaneous data entry projects as needed.Professional Development & Teamwide Projects (5%) -
      • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations and conferences.
      • Participate in trainings, webinars, affinity groups, and conversations to continuously deepen understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.Qualifications
        • Bachelor's degree required.
        • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a prospect research role or in a fundraising role, preferably in prospect development.
        • Demonstrated analytical skills related to complex donor research.
        • Demonstrated ability to develop proactive prospect research methodologies in support of Development strategic efforts.
        • Experience in a nonprofit setting preferred.
        • Advanced knowledge in MS Office Suite, including with Outlook (email & calendar), Word, and Excel.
        • Experience using discretion and diplomacy to work with sensitive, confidential information and collaborate with various stakeholders.
        • Experience with Blackbaud eCRM, the Raiser's Edge or similar fundraising database.
        • Experience using ResearchPoint or similar fundraising research and analysis tools.
        • Experience with Relationship Science (RelSci) or other relationship analysis tools.
        • Experience with moves management and prospect research's role in this process.
        • Knowledge of techniques and methodologies of donor research using traditional print and online sources with particular focus on the specific requirements of prospect research.
        • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
        • Strong attention to detail required to maintain data hygiene, proofread, etc.
        • Exemplary organizational skills to manage large qualities of details, tasks, and deadlines.
        • Outstanding ability to think strategically, analytically, and creatively.
        • Ability to prioritize assignments and shift gears for different tasks regularly.
        • Ability to work successfully in teams and under own initiative, to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, and to meet deadlines efficiently.
        • Strong customer service orientation and follow-through.
        • Ability to work with confidential information.
